Current Scenario

Globally, there has been an increase in awareness that renewable energy provides significant economic benefits, apart from being able to provide energy access to billions of people at the bottom of the pyramid. Renewable energy is also well capable of addressing issues related to climate change. It is estimated that in 2013, approximately 19% of the global energy consumption was renewable energy and the same was pegged at 23% in the year 2014.

Growth in renewable energy is mainly driven by factors such as government policies, and easy access to technology, which together has made the industry cost competitive.  Europe has mainly remained an important market both from the standpoint of consumption and innovation. Emerging economies such as China, India, South Africa and Brazil have large share of the installed capacity for renewable energy. Globally many institutions have also made substantial commitments to purchase renewable energy thereby increasing the demand for renewable energy.

Investment Flows

Global investment in renewable energy excluding large hydropower projects was pegged at US$ 270 plus billion in 2014. Developing economies invested US$ 131.3 billion, 36% higher than that of the year 2013, while developed countries investment reached US$ 138.9 billion in 2014, up only 3% from 2013. Solar power and wind were the leading technologies in terms of dollars investment. Solar power accounted for 55% of new investment while wind power accounted for 37%.
